"Chum" Fischer

Stanley J. "Chum" Fischer, age 88, of Marshfield, formerly of Ontonagon Michigan, died Tuesday May 6, 2008 at the House of the Dove under the tender care of Ministry Home Care Hospice Services of Marshfield, WI.
Stanley John Fischer, son of Stanley P. and Veline M. (Sylvester) Fischer was born February 4, 1920, in Ewen Michigan. He graduated from Ewen High School in 1938. After graduation he enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps. In August of 1942, Stanley enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in WWII as an ambulance driver for the U.S. Third Army in Europe. After his service to his country, he moved to Ontonagon, MI. He was united in holy marriage to Helen Ann Deruchowski on July 12, 1948 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Ontonagon. They made their home in Ontonagon until 2005 when health issues necessitated a move to Marshfield, WI.
Stanley was employed at the White Pine copper mine for several years, and then became a power plant operator for the paper mill in Ontonagon.
Mr. Fischer was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also belonged to the VFW Post # 5600 in Ontonagon. For many years he served as Commander of the post's Military Honor Guard. He was an organizing member of the Labor Day Celebration in Ontonagon, and directed the parade for many years. He also served the community as Justice of the Peace and assisted the Ontonagon Memorial Hospital by transporting patients by ambulance as needed. He enjoyed dancing, polka music, baseball, basketball, taking Helen for rides in the country and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Stanley is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen of Marshfield; children James (Linda) Fischer, Taylor, WI; Ann (Robert) Davidson, Gladstone, MI; Mary (James) Beathard, Marshfield, WI; and John (Debra) Fischer, Green Bay, WI; twelve grandchildren, one step-granddaughter and two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Beatrice Fyfe and Robert, his youngest brother. A Memorial service will be at 11:00AM on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at Holy Family Catholic Church 515 Pine St, in Ontonagon. Father Anthony Lukose will officiate. Burial of ashes with Military Honors by VFW Post #5600 will be in the Holy Family Catholic Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 AM until service time, at the church on Tuesday. Hansen Funeral Home, of Marshfield, and Cane Funeral Home of Ontonagon, are assisting the family with arrangements.
