Sylvia Louise (Myllymaki) Sorvari, 98, of Ontonagon, Michigan, passed away onA November 15, 2012 at the Aspirus Long Term Care Unit in Ontonagon.A
She was born on May 8, 1914 to Erik and Beta Liisa Myllymaki in Rubicon (now Rousseau) Michigan, one of 13 children, on the family farm. A Sylvia grew up on the farm and attended the Rousseau School. A
On January 29, 1933, she married Charles F. Sorvari of Greenland. A They had three children; Raymond, Carl and Patsy and raised the family at their home in Greenland, after living for three years in Lansing during WWII.
In addition to being a lovely lady and a devoted wife, mother and homemaker, Sylvia was a woman of many talents. A She was well known for her creative and useful Rag-Rugs and she was featured many times in the local newspaper. She also created beautiful Wedding and Birthday cakes that were enjoyed by her family and many others in the area. A In her later years, she stepped up her crocheting and at age 96, another newspaper article called her the "Afghan Lady," referring to the 60 afghans she had recently made for her family. A After giving afghans to each family member, she began offering them for sale at the Ontonagon County Historical Museum Gift Shop. A
Sylvia had a fantastic memory and was often contacted concerning names, dates, buildings and events for historical purposes. A Ask her a question and she was usually able to provide the answer.
Sylvia loved to sing Finnish songs and she had a great sense of humor. She had a joke for just about every occasion and for all age levels. Every weekday morning she would sit in front of the radio with her coffee to listen to the Jan Tucker Show, and she would write down the recipe of the day in her journal along with the date and temperature.A
She enjoyed playing Scrabble with friends and family and then later switched to the game "Upwords." Sunday Mornings, she watched Suomi Kutsuu faithfully; celebrating her Finnish Heritage.A
She lived in Greenland for 66 years and moved to Cane Court for eight years before moving to Aspirus. A
She lost her beloved husband Charles in 1971 and her lovely daughter Patsy in 2004. A She was also preceded in death by her parents and 11 of her 12 siblings, along with many other family members. A
Sylvia is survived by her two sons, Raymond (Dianne) of Antioch, California, andA Carl (Joyce) of Greenland; 11 grand children (Terese, Jim, Kenneth, Dianne, Mark, Roy, Robert, Ruth, Jill, Paul and Patrick);A 17 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren, along with her sister Beatrice Miilu and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20 at the Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon with visitation preceding at 12:00 noon.Burial will take place in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Greenland.
