Wesley Onni Maki

To some he was a Dad, to some he was a Grandpa, to one he was a husband and to some he was a great friend, but to all, he was a funny, kind and loving person. Wesley Onni Maki passed away on November 19, 2017 at 5PM at the Munson Hospital in Traverse City, Michigan due to complications from to a heart attack that occurred on October 19th. He fought hard and gave it his best, but he is in a better place now and even though we lost Wesley, he still lives with us in our hearts forever.

Wesley loved to be outdoors, if you knew him, you knew he was always outside. At 86, Wesley chopped wood for the furnace for the winter. He was always outside doing things around the house and was always there if you needed him. He loved to make up jokes and mess around. Let's face it, he was a troublemaker! Whenever Wes went out to eat, he would blow the paper from the straw at someone. Once, it got stuck in some ladies hair!

Wesley was born March 14, 1931 in Hancock, Michigan to Sophia and Olli Maki. The youngest of ten children, he grew up in Simar and attended school in Mass. He was a Veteran of the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1953. He married Garnet Myhren on May 19, 1956. The couple lived briefly in Chicago but ultimately made their home in Ontonagon where they raised five children. Wesley work as a Machine Tender at the Paper Mill until he retired in 1995. He stayed active after retirement doing what he loved to do and frequently visited his children. He passed away surrounded by his wife, all of his children and his three youngest grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Garnet, his children Tracy (Jim) Store of Grand Rapids, Kelly Tucker and Dr .David Tucker of Arkansas, Blaze (Denise) Maki of Ontonagon, Derek (Kati) Maki of Traverse City and Micki Maki of Traverse City; by his Grandchildren, Christy ( Neal) Smith, Mandy Christian (Bill Helms), Anna Tucker (Ben Zulpo) Robert (Kenzie) Tucker, Rebecca (Barrett) Miller, Brett Maki, Zech  (Christina) Leon, Lily Maki, Josi Maki and Lucy Maki; by his Great-Grandchildren, Sydnie Smith, Tyson Smith, Claire Zulpo, Connolly Zulpo, Ryleigh Leon, Gage Helms and was looking forward to his newest Great-Grandson due in January. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and one sister.
