Obituary

Winifred Ruotanen, 85, passed away on April 24, 2010 following a brief illness. Winnie was born on the Cranberry Road to Frank and Ida Kangas on August 17, 1924. She attended the Cranberry Grade School and the Green High School, finishing with graduation at the Ontonagon High School with the class of 1942. She worked for the Air Force in Detroit and Chicago during World War II. Upon returning to Michigan she attended Suomi College for one year. She was married to Henry Ruotanen in the Green Church on July 27, 1946.

Winnie Worked for the Ottawa National Forest, Ontonagon Ranger unit starting in 1957 and then transferred to the Chequamegon National Forest until her retirement in 1985.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Eli who was killed in WWII, brothers Heino and Elmer, and two sisters, Viliina and Eva. She is survived by a sister, Nelma Kananen of Warren MI, three children Norman (Elda) of Abilene, TX, Edward (Treena) of Gastonia, NC, and Nancy (David) Ogimachi of Marina, CA, four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Winnie was a member of the Siloa Lutheran Church, a Life Member of the DAV, Eagles and VFW Auxillaries, and Eastern Star.

Winnie enjoyed visiting her family and her many friends, with whom she played many games. She was also active in the Riverview Senior Center. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Siloa Lutheran Church or any of her other organizations. Visitaion will be Wednesday, April 28, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Cane Funeral Home. Her funeral will be Thursday at 11:00 am at the Siloa Lutheran Church, followed by burial at the Green Cemetery.
