Ethel B. Zartner, age 96, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 in San Diego, California.
She was born September 29, 1925 to John and Emma (Krueger) Schneck in Wausau, Wisconsin. Ethel married James (Jim) Zartner on November 30, 1943 in Ontonagon and had two children, Jim and Gail. She shared her life with James until his passing on July 21, 2001.
Ethel was a wonderful example of how to age gracefully. She was a loving person, who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Ethel was blessed with good fortune when it came to playing bingo and enjoyed working on puzzles. She spent many winters in Alpine, California, with her daughter, Gail, prior to living with her permanently five years ago. Ethel enjoyed traveling between the two states, visiting beautiful locations along the way.
Ethel was a long-time Ontonagon resident and worked as a cook for the Ontonagon school system for many years. Ethel was a devoted member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and served on Saint Martha’s Circle. She was also a life member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 5600.
She is survived by daughter Gail (Clay) Engebretsen of Alpine, California; grandchildren Trina (Quint) Nichol of Torrington Wyoming; Blaine (Ashley) Zartner of Milton, Georgia; Katie (Robert) Williams of Alpine, California; and Ben (Nicole) Engebretsen of Pine Valley, California; and 10 great-grandchildren. She appreciated the additional love from her friends and extended family: nephew Ken (Barbara) Jones family, Carolyn (Lloyd) Martindale, Judy (Ken) Roehm, Roberta (Bill) Chabot, Charlene (David) Allie, nephew Jon (Lorrie) Schneck, and Jackie (Lance) Little (Schneck).
Preceding in death are her husband, James Zartner; her son James B. Zartner; sisters Hazel Barry and Ruth Hebert; brothers Robert and Raymond Schneck.
A graveside service will be held on May 31st, 2022 at 1pm at the Holy Family Cemetery in Ontonagon, MI. A luncheon will take place immediately following at the VFW in Ontonagon.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Holy Family Church and the VFW Post 5600.
