Obituary

Garnet Myhren Maki passed away on March 1, 2022, at 12:28 A.M. at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and ultimately passed away due to complications. Garnet was one of the most selfless, compassionate, and kind-hearted people. Her life and the light she brought into this world will forever be cherished and celebrated. And although she is not physically with us anymore, her family and friends can find safety and comfort in the memories and experiences they were lucky enough to share with her. She positively influenced every person to which she crossed paths with and is a soul that will truly be missed. However, it is comforting to know that she has been forever reunited with Wesley, her husband of 61 years.

Garnet was born on June 25, 1937, in Ontonagon, Michigan to Lucille and Walter Myhren. The second oldest of seven children, she grew up and attended school in Ontonagon. She met Wesley Onni Maki while working at the A&W in Ontonagon. The couple married on May 19, 1956. They lived briefly in Chicago and ultimately resided in Ontonagon where they raised five children. Garnet worked in the cafeteria at Ontonagon Area High School. She has been a life-long supporter of the Green Bay Packers. After retirement, she frequently visited her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She passed away surrounded by her children.

She is survived by her children Tracy (Jim) Store of Ontonagon, Kelly Tucker and Dr. David Tucker of Arkansas, Blaze (Denise) Maki of Ontonagon, Derek (Kati) Maki of Traverse City and Micki Maki of Traverse City; by her Grandchildren, Christy (Neal) Smith, Mandy Christian (Bill Helms), Anna Tucker (Ben Zulpo) Robert (Kenzie) Tucker, Rebecca (Barrett) Miller, Brett Maki, Zech (Christina) Leon, Lily Maki, Josi Maki and Lucy Maki; by her great-grandchildren, Sydnie Smith, Tyson Smith, Claire Zulpo, Connolly Zulpo, Dawson Tucker, Oliver Tucker, Wesley Miller, Charlotte Miller, Ryleigh Leon, and Gage Helms. She is preceded in death by her husband Wesley, her parents Walter and Lucille, her brother Leroy Myhren, and her brother Rodney Myhren. She is survived by her sisters Kay Lukkari, Marlene Sramek, Colleen Nelson, and her brother Randy Myhren.

A funeral will be held on June 25, 2022 at 11:00am at the United Methodist Church, in Ontonagon. Visitation will be from 10:00am to 11:00am. The burial will immediately follow at the Riverside Cemetery. A luncheon will take place after the burial in the basement of the United Methodist Church.
