Herbert Erland Johnson of Mass City, MI passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at the age of 79.
Herb was born in Ontonagon, MI on September 14, 1940, to Erland and Alma (Norgard) Johnson. He married Susie Goard in 1965 in Mass City, MI. Herb was a graduate of Ontonagon Area Schools and was a veteran of the Korean War where he served in the Army.
After returning home, Herb had various jobs including working at the Ontonagon Paper Mill and the Ontonagon County Sheriff's Department. He ended his work career at the White Pine Copper Refinery where he retired after 37 years of service.
Herb, Susie, and their four children made their home in the East Branch area of Mass City, MI where they managed a small farm. There they enjoyed canning, hunting, fishing, and spending time at their camp. After retiring, Herb picked up many hobbies including photography, traveling, coin collecting, refurbishing computers, golfing, and woodworking. Herb was a longtime member of the Mass City VFW and a lifelong resident of the Upper Peninsula. He was a loving partner, father, grandfather, and friend. Herb always had a joke to share and would always help out those in need.
He is survived by his longtime partner, Denise Wilcox of Mass City, MI; children Denise (Ivan Aratlakov) of Glenview, IL, Nancy of Marquette, MI, Randy of Wausau, WI; and grandchildren Lacey of Chicago, IL and Ethan of Glenview, IL.
Herb was preceded in death by his wife Susie, daughter Lynn, brother Erdvart, and his parents Erland and Alma.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 23rd at 1:00 p.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery in Greenland. A luncheon will follow at the Rousseau Bar.
