Joseph Szaroletta passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on August 6, 2023, after a short stay at Mission Point Nursing Home in Hancock.
Joe was born April 16, 1931 in Ontonagon to John and Cecelia (Vertatich) Szaroletta.
He graduated from the Ontonagon Area School in 1949. He then joined the US Army 2nd Repl Co 2nd Infantry Division and served during the Korean War, ending with an honorable discharge on November 2, 1954, and returned home.
Joe worked at White Pine Copper Mine and the Paper Mill in Ontonagon until retirement in 1996. He farmed throughout his lifetime. Gardening was always a special interest. Joe was a big Detroit sports fan of the Lions and Tigers. He enjoyed watching the games. He drove many local miles seeing the sites in the community and especially the local farm fields, animals and Lake Superior. Joe was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.
Joe is survived by five nieces and one nephew; Joanna (Gale) Holmstrom, Mary Jane (Dave) Loukus, Cheryl Fedrizzi, Mary Lynn Ogan, John Michael Szaroletta, Sandy (David) Hutto and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John (Mary) Szaroletta, sister Virginia (Joseph) Stefanich and niece Bonita "Bonnie" Homrich.
A private burial service will be held at the Holy Family Catholic Church, with his final resting place at the Holy Family Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of expressions of sympathy, the family suggests doing an act of kindness for a loved one.
