Julia Marie “Jewel” Dahlstrom, formerly of Ontonagon, passed away on November 16, 2023, surrounded by family, at UP Health Systems - Portage in Hancock, Michigan following complications from a knee surgery that took place in September.
Jewel was born on February 13, 1934 to Nicholas and Marion (Chaput) Freiberg in Hubbell, Michigan. She was the ninth child of ten children.
After graduating from Lake Linden High School in 1952, Jewel worked at the Ben Franklin store in Calumet until she met a handsome young man named John “Jack” Dahlstrom, marrying him on June 27, 1953 in Lake Linden, Michigan. Most of their 56 years of marriage were spent in Ontonagon, raising a family of nine children, four boys and five girls. Jewel was a voracious reader and a wonderful cook. She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and worked in various cleaning jobs in Ontonagon.
She is survived by her children: John Jr., Jerry, Scott (Sheri), Joan, Tammy, Jeffrey (Joan), Laurie and Lisa (Bill). Her sister Lorraine Rose and sisters-in-law, Marjorie Freiberg, Mary Bobbitt and Patricia Dahlstrom-Pleau also survive her in addition to numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Jewel was also blessed with 20 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jack in 2009, daughter Julie in 2021, her parents, and special friend Al Smith. Also preceding her in death were her siblings: sisters Lauratha Freiberg, Loretta Povalski, Theresa Bettens, and Joan Freiberg; brothers Lawrence, Lionel, Joseph and Francis; sisters-in-law Elaine Freiberg, Alice Freiberg, and Albertine Castenado; brothers-in-law Robert Rose, Eugene Povalski, Glenn Bettens, Albert Dahlstrom, William Pleau, and Ted Cota.
There will be a private family graveside service in the spring at Holy Family Catholic Cemetery, Ontonagon.
Our mom was much loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
The family would like to thank the Harbor House staff in Ontonagon and the staff of Green Tree of Hubbell for the care she received during the time she spent with them.
Also special thanks to the staff at UPHS - Portage for the care given to her and to the family during her last days. The family will always remember their kindness and compassion.
