Michael E. Kemppainen, 74 of Rockland passed away February 3, 2020 at Omega House in Houghton after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Marquette, MI on January 30, 1946 son of the late Wilho & Florence (Maki) Kemppainen.
Michael graduated from Ewen High School in 1964. In 1966 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving until 1968. After leaving the military, Michael worked for General Motors until his retirement. After his retirement, he ran a small construction business in downstate Michigan.
Michael moved back to the area and married the former Sally Pietila Pantti in 2005. He had many hobbies including wood working, hunting, fishing, enjoying the outdoors, gardening, jigsaw puzzles and going to the casino.
Michael is survived by his wife Sally, children from his first marriage; Krishna (Rick) Miller, Michelle (John) Ladinski, Theresa (Brian) Schluckbier, grandchildren Harrison, Anna & Landon Miller, Dylan, Lexie, Alyse & Jaxon Ladinski, step-children Colleen (John) Buzzo & Andrew Pantti, step-grandchildren John & Justin (Emily) Buzzo, Waino Pantti, Martin Shamion, 1 step-great granddaughter Salma Buzzo, brothers David (Bonnie), Bruce (Dorothy) Paul (Charolette) Kemppainen and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step-daughter Christina Shamion.
A memorial service will be held at the Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon, MI on Saturday, February 8th at 4 pm. Friends may call at the funeral home 1 hour prior to the start of the service.
