Roy E. Nurmi passed away unexpectedly at his home on September 1, 2022, he was 74.
He was born on the family farm in Bruce Crossing on June 8, 1948 to Emil and Mayme Nurmi, the 3rd of 5 children. He attended Ewen School and joined the Army in 1968, where he was stationed in Germany. While in the Army, he was an armored vehicle mechanic and was honorably discharged in 1971. He made his way back to Michigan and was employed by White Pine Copper. He then worked for the U.S. Forest Service where he was employed as a grader operator. He had a combined 20 years working for the U.S. Government between the Army and Forest Service
In his spare time, Roy enjoyed touring the area and visiting with family and friends. He was very social, making his way to town every day for his daily rounds. He always made time for connecting with family and was always happy to hear what was new with everyone. He provided Christmas dinner to his closest family each year, which was very much appreciated.
He is survived by his sister Edith (Bill) Newby of Maryville, TN., brother Michael Nurmi of Bruce Crossing, Sister In-law Barbara Nurmi of Watton, MI., three nieces, Amy (Dennis) McCarthy of Columbus, IN., Peggy (Donald) Grosso of Paulding, MI., and Lisa Risku of Watton, MI., great nieces and nephews, Cheyanne, Shaun, Paige, Dylan, Katelyn, and Bodey. He is further survived by his cousins, Donna, Sandy, and Armas and many other cousins, friends, and faithful cat, Lee-Roy.
Roy was proceeded in death by his parents, Emil and Mayme, his brothers, Carl and George Nurmi, and his cousin Gene Nurmi.
A service honoring Roy's life will be held Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Hillside Cemetery in Bruce Crossing at 11:00 A.M. with full military rights. A luncheon will take place at Twilly's Sport's Bar and Grill immediately following the service.
The family would like to thank Dennis Lannet and Howard Lindberg for bringing Roy to his medical appointments. Also, thank you to Sonco Ambulance, Bruce Crossing Fire Department, and Cane Funeral home for their assistance with the loss of Roy.
