Vernon Hemming of Bruce Crossing, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, October 1, 2020. He was 97 years old. Vernon was born to Albert and Hilma Hemming on November 19, 1922 in Paynesville, MI. He graduated high school after a hiatus to help raise his youngest sibling. He married Georgia Ann Carr on February 9, 1946 and together they had one son Ward and a daughter Becky.
Vernon worked at several restaurants and then served in the Army in WWII,in the Philipines and Japan as an anti-aircraft gunner. He came home and worked at the co-op gas station in Bruce Crossing, and for Tom Nordine assembling saws. He was a Master Electrician and owned/operated Vern's Repair Shop. He operated the Bruce Crossing sewer system, was a bus driver for Ewen/Ewen-Trout Creek Schools.He was a volunteer for the Bruce Crossing Fire Department and an active church member of Bethany Wels Lutheran Church in Bruce Crossing.
Vernon is survived by his wife Georgia, both his children Ward (Rizalina) Hemming and Becky (Barton) Kennedy, six grand children, 13 great-grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and two sisters-in-law.
He is preceded in death by both parents, six brothers, three sisters, a son-in-law, great-grandson and a great great grand daughter.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at 11:00 am at the Bethany Wels Lutheran Church in Bruce Crossing. Friends may call at the church 1 hour prior to the start of the service. Burial with military honors will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery in Bruce Crossing following the service.
