Ronald Martin Shamion was born June 24th 1939 in Stambaugh, Michigan to Merle and Martin Shamion. He grew up in the Iron River, Michigan area, served in the US Air Force and was stationed for a time in San Antonio Texas where he met his wife of 56 years, Juana “Josie” Shamion. They resided in the San Antonio area for some time where they began raising their family and eventually landed in Ontonagon Michigan where Ron’s family had relocated when his dad found employment at the mine in White Pine. Ron also worked at the mine for a number of years and would eventually work and retire from Smurfit-Stone Container.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents Merle and Martin, and his brother Wayne (Cathy) Shamion. He is survived by his wife, Josie, his siblings – Robert (Sharon) Shamion, Kathleen (Robert) Pattison and Dan (Connie) Shamion, his children - Christine (Carl) Brees of Ontonagon, Ronald Shamion Jr. of Minocqua Wisconsin and Stephanie (Terry) Hannu of Ironwood Michigan, five grandchildren - Ronnie, Nicollette, Ashley, Adam and Ryan; step-grandchildren - Keri, Kelly, Crystal and Zach and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. All of Ron’s family was dear to him. He enjoyed many outdoor activities including days at the beach teaching his kids to swim, hunting and fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing on back trails with his grandkids, 4-wheeling and hiking. He was always busy with hobbies - fixing cars, snowmobiles, gardening, playing cards, shooting pool, wine making, spending time with friends and just about anything else he could do in the area.

After an extended battle with ALS, Ron passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family and caregivers. Even so, he was a life-long optimist and in his recent words, he “had a good run”.

Please join us all at the Eagles Club in Ontonagon, Saturday, July 16th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. for food, beverages, and a remembrance of Ron’s life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ron’s name to the Ontonagon County Cancer Association. We thank the organization; whose volunteers tirelessly work for and give to the residents of our county.
