Seven years to late but I always remember Johnny as my cousin even though he wasn’t, I spent a lot of nights at uncle Don Coons house when Johnny was there growing up , I always wanted to know if Johnny was going to be there when I spent the night because I enjoyed being around him even though I was younger, crying as I type this just thinking about him , I’m sorry I couldn’t have come to his funeral, nothing but fond memories for me

To the family of Doc Austin,
Please accept our deepest sympathy for your loss. John was a great family doctor of ours and we missed him tons when he left the hospital. I personally witnessed several of John's acts of support and generosity to local youth organizations. He really liked to help the local kids! Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of sorrow. Sincerely, Geri, John, Kyle and Eric Hawley

So Sorry to hear Dr. Austin has passed. He saved my life three different times in the ER room of Ontonagon Hospital. I feel sad he isn't with us doing what he was so good at, helping others.

I sat next to doc one night at the Watersmeet casino. He kept me very entertained and we had each other laughing. Saw him the next day in the restaurant, and he was just gregarious as the previous night. Really enjoyed meeting him, and I was very sad to hear he had passed away.

Dr Austin and I spent quite a bit of time together during training on the computer/ electronic medical records ( not his favorite aspect on medicine I may add )!
I came to know him as a kind and witty man with the unusual quality of being a good listener.
He treated everyone he encountered wether they be a patient/prisoner, custody staff , or coworker with dignity.
Often he had a funny quipp!
I spoke with him on Friday at noon, he said that this was his long but good day because he was enroute home to Little Rita. Instead he returned to his ultimate home in eternal life . May he rest peacefully and shine his light down upon all who are in need of comfort.
He will be fondly remembered .

I recently spent quite a bit of time with Dr Austin while training him especially on the computer and electronic records( not his favorite aspect of medicine ). I came to know him as a kind , witty, and caring man . He was a good listener and he treated everyone whose path he encountered with dignity and respect whether they be a patient/prisoner, staff, coworker, or supervisor.
I last spoke with him Friday at noon when he closed by saying "It's my long drive day but I get to go home to my Little Rita"! Rest peacefully!

Doc was always good to me and my family when Anna was born he would come to the hospital to take care of her even if he wasn't the one on call. I always trusted him he could be a little rough around the edges but so am I at least he had the balls to say what he thought. RIP DOC

Dear Family

I was shocked and saddened to hear of John's passing. It truly reminds me of our temporary time here on earth. I know him well, over time career and distance made our time together less frequent, but when the connection was made either in person or on the phone, it was as if we just left off yesterday. John was an inspiration, we were chums in High School and to see him go from an average student through the Army, then college, Med School and a practicing Physician was truly amazing. We had a HS Biology Teacher, Mr. Gustufson that really gave John a hard time, John would have had the better part of that as Burt Gustufson, never thought John would have amounted to much, Be proud of your Dad, I am. I miss him, wish I had seen more of him but I know he squeezed a ton of living into his years.

Remember the times you had, the great memories...... The tears and heartache are tough, but they will pass.

You are in our thoughts, prayers and best wishes.

Doc & I had a very special relationship. We knew each other as frail human beings, who needed the grace of God to make us look good. May that grace & love of Christ be with his family at this time. He & I cried together under the heaviness of this world. My heart grieves his passing from this world; and it rejoices in the hope that Christ gives us in his passing into the next life. Always in Christ, Rev. Howard Neider

The doc I will always remember in my heart is the man that delivered my 1st grandchild. He was as proud of that delivery as if Nick were his own. We had a lot of conversations in our years at OMH / Aspirus and I am truly sad for his family and Rita at his unexpected death, you are in my prayers.
