Walter (Sonny) P. Ark, age 75, of Mass City passed away Saturday April 30, 2016, at UP Health System Portage, following a short illness with cancer.
He was born on June 28, 1940, the son of the late Waino and Elsie Ark. He married Denise Hattula who preceded him in death in 1995. He graduated from Mass High School, attended Suomi College, and recieved his Bachlors Degree in teaching from Northern Michigan University. He entered the US, Army, serving in Vietnam, after his discharge from the Army he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and retired in 1985 as a CW03.
He was preceded in death by parents Waino and Elsie Ark, brothers Wilho, Wayne, Oscar, sisters, Ellen, Helen, and Jean. He is survived by brother, Robert (Nancy) Ark, sisters, Alyce Ark Oertel, Ruth (Bud) Huuki. Also surviving are many, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was an avid sports fan, following the Detroit Lions, Tiger as well as college basketball.
A Memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Monday, May 9, 2016 at the Cane Funeral Home, Ontonagon. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. Interment will take place, with Military Honors, at Maple Grove Cemetery, Greenland. A celebration of his life will follow at the Rousseau Bar.
