Robert Francis Schon

April 8, 1932 ~ June 15, 2016 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Robert (Bob) Francis Schon died peacefully in his sleep Wednesday June 15, 2016 at Ontonagon Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. Robert was born on April 8, 1932 to Frank Schon and Beatrice Voss McCarthy. He graduated from Ontonagon High School in 1950 where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball all four years. While playing point guard the Polar Bears won the regionals. He then attended West Point and Northern Michigan University where he played point guard on the Wildcat’s basketball team. He was commissioned into the US Marine Corps on April 24, 1952. On October 23, 1954, Bob married the love of his life, Carolyn Rogers. They shared 54 years of marriage before her passing in 2007. Bob grew up and lived by Lake Superior his whole life and worked on a ship on the Great Lakes one summer. He then worked at Copper Range and retired from Smurfit Stone Container in 1996, Bob served his community by being on the hospital board and serving as president. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church his entire life.

More than anything else, Bob loved Carolyn and his family. He was an avid Packer fan attending numerous games throughout the years. His second love was his camp on Forest Highway 16 where he enjoyed entertaining family and friends. His skills as a mixologist came into question many times.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn, parents Frank and Beatrice, sisters Sharon Schmaus and Marilyn Norton. He was also preceded in death by John “Mac” McCarthy who he knew as his dad, and in-laws, John Rogers and Dorothy (Harry Gorman). Bob is survived by sons John (Myrna) of Kingsford, Kenneth (Laurie) of Ishpeming, and daughter Susan (Tom) Pestka of Ontonagon. He also is survived by grandchildren Heather Schon-Cain, Brandon (Jennifer) Schon, Heidi Schon, Jennifer (Gregg) Nelson, Steven (Erin) Bertucci, Katie (Ben) Burmester, Samantha Schon, Zachery Schon, Melissa (Faraz) Siddique, and Michael Pestka. He is survived by great grandchildren Jamie, Elizabeth, Leland, Carolyn, Annie, Alyssa, A.J., Drew, Bryce, Jake, and Baby Siddique.

He is also survived by his sister-in-law Nancy (Stanley) Domitrovich, brothers-in-law Robert Rogers and George Schmaus, his brother Edward and, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church on Wednesday June, 22, 2016. Visitation will be at 10am with services at 11am. Father Michael Jacobus officiating.
